HORIZON System
The HORIZON System has been developed by HSG over the past decade to manage the movement of container shipments and information across multiple carriers, terminals and modes of transportation. A central data repository collects and organizes information from all participants in the supply chain. Horizon Lines has been using the HORIZON system managed by HSG for a number of years, resulting in substantial cost savings. NetCaptainŽ, the web-based shipper interface to HORIZON, has created tremendous efficiency for Horizon Lines shippers.
Trip Plan
At the core of HORIZON is the trip plan, which is used to schedule out the point-to-point movement of each shipment moving through the system. Transportation events, as they enter the system from the container transportation network, feed into the trip plan against a schedule that was created at time of booking. This allows the trip plan to be a highly dynamic source for event management using an alerts engine and escalation sequence. Shippers and providers use the trip plan for proactive and reactive alerts, reports (both scheduled and automated) and for standard tracking of shipments.

The shipper web interface to HORIZON is called NetcaptainŽ. Of the Fortune 500, 310 companies are registered users. Through NetCaptainŽ shippers create transportation management portals for a targeted, customizable display of key information and features based on security permissions set by administrators and preferences selected by the end user. NetCaptainŽ has been in production for 8 years, and has 14,000 users.

Alerts Engine
The Alerts Engine in the HORIZON system continuously monitors the shipment folder created for each shipment to act on business rules established based on trip plan milestones. Alerts may be created around location, entity (POL, customer, etc.) or events. Alerts can be sent via fax or e-mail, and/or displayed on the portal. All can be customized.
Reactive Alerts - alerts sent after an event has occurred. Including: equipment dispatched, bill of lading created, equipment departure from the port of load, equipment arrival at the port of discharge, equipment gated in at the port of load or rail yard, and equipment gated out from port of discharge or rail ramp.
Aging Alerts - alerts that occur when equipment is stopped at a certain point and not moving. Including: equipment aging at the port and equipment aging interline.
Proactive Alerts - alerts that occur at a certain time prior to scheduled event. Including: arrival notification, port cut-off and rail cut-off
